Move furniture into centre of room and drape it with old sheets

2. Remove nails, electric switch cover plates, curtain rods, etc. with hammer and screw driver

3. Wash walls with TSP, for better paint adhesion, following instructions for water and TSP ratio

4. Fills holes with putty according to instructions

5. Tape along edges and over hardware that cannot be removed

TAKE A BREAK!

6. When putty is dry, lightly sand those spots and wipe the dust off

7. Start cutting in (painting edges) with primer* which is only needed when surface is porous or paints are incompatible (eg. latex over alkyd)

8. Roll primer on starting with a big "W", then fill in over that

TAKE A BREAK!

9. When primer is dry repeat steps 7 and 8 with paint; most paints will require 2 coats depending on what color you're painting over and what color you've chosen

10. Check for any final touch-ups needed before you remove tape (best done when paint is still a bit wet) and replace switch plates, etc.

Serves:

one happy family for many years to come

Bloom Where You're Planted

Sometimes life throws us a curve ball and we find ourselves in a totally different arena than we ever imagined for ourselves. Keep in mind that lighter colors will make the room appear larger and deeper colors will create a cozier environment. Also keep in mind that even a neutral color has different color undertones, so it is important to sample the colors in the space where they will live to make sure you are bringing out the correct tones in the room. Once you have your blank canvas you are ready to bring out your personal style. Here are some suggestions:

Fabric is the easiest way to add color. Choose pillows, throws and curtains in your favorite colors or even the color of the season. You can also choose neutral pillows and tie them with trims or fabrics that bring in just the right pop of color.

Add a great rug. Mix and match them for an eclectic look or an oriental rug for a more traditional look.

When expensive art is not an option, create your own. Purchase blank canvases and paint in your colors to create one of a kind art. The larger the canvas the more impact it has. Try creating a combination of canvases.

Choose a pop color that is featured in a number of products such as desk chair, books, stapler, curtains, etc. These can be easily changed and trends and a seasons change.

When investing in window coverings, choose something that is classic and withstanding such as wooden blinds. To add color and softness, drape fabrics at the top or create a unique valance.

When shopping for pillows and accessories, don't feel like they all have to "match" perfectly. Bring your favorite colors together and tie them together with one common color, say chocolate brown or black.

Working with all white in various textures, undertones and finishes is a great way to decorate. Add your color in very special pieces that become the focal points of the room.

Take decorating with neutrals to a new level by painting the walls and main furniture pieces the same color such as the desk and filing cabinets. As these become the background, you then highlight with a great fabric print or choose one special color and decorate with accessories in that color.

Create your own headboard and cover it with a great color and textured fabric. This board can be updated and changed as your tastes change, giving your bedroom a new and updated look whenever you like.

Bring a metal color in as the accent, which brings a shine and richness to the décor.

Paint cabinets a neutral color and, where possible, remove the wood and add glass to a cabinet door or two. Feature kitchen items in pop colors through this glass and bring a whole new feel to the kitchen.

The key to interior design today is creating spaces that are a reflection of you. It will cover all the imperfections on the cabinet. We tried it and were very pleased with the results. We used a small roller to paint the body of the cabinet and a small brush to paint the accent color onto the handles. We used three coats of coverage and got a beautiful smooth finish, we were amazed.

Before

After

Wow - can you believe the difference? Choose our Designer white or one of the lighter colors and then we mix one part water and to one part paint. Keep in mind that you can adjust this mix depending on the finish of your piece and the amount of paint you would like to show. Once you brush on, use a rag and wipe off any access paint and drips. Repeat until you get the look that you like. You can put more paint into the holes and crevices to enhance the look as well.

Before

After

Suggestions on Time Saving

Q. I am redoing my daughter's room. The table and chairs that I painted for her are chipped and look worn out. I would like to refinish the whole set, but the thought of sanding, priming and repainting the set exhausts me-I just don't have that kind of time. Is there a way to salvage the table and chair set and cut my time in half?

A. Your painted table and chairs is a piece of art work and should look and feel that way when you are done. The Canvas Home Basics Diamondhard Furniture, Cabinet and Trim paint was designed for projects just like this. It has a tough durable acrylic finish and dries leaving a smooth gloss finish. No priming is needed and the paint comes in a variety of neutral colors. You can use a variety of different paint techniques-antiquing, marbling, or whitewashing. If you want a bold look, try some type of animal print using several of the colors from the paint line. The paint is also self leveling, so the paint strokes from your brush will disappear when applied a little heavy-be sure to give the table adequate dry time. The recommended cure time is seven days.

Before

After

The once brightly colored chairs now blend into any home environment.

Is Priming Required?

Q. I am getting ready to paint my kitchen cabinets with your Furniture, Cabinet and Trim Paint and have read the instructions that no priming is required. Are the instructions correct?

A. There is a primer in the paint that allows for no additional priming, however, when you are planning to cover very dark surfaces with a lighter color or very light surfaces with a darker color you might want to utilize an additional primer to save time in the painting process. The Furniture, Cabinet and Trim Paint has the best results when thin multiple layers of paint are applied. So feel free to utilize a primer if you feel more comfortable in your painting process.

How to Choose the Right Color

Q. I am trying to choose the right color for my living room and there are so many colors it is confusing. I want to use a neutral color but not sure how dark or where to start.

A. The Canvas Home Basics Pre-Mixed Paint system is a great help in making that decision. There are currently seven base colors that are part of two color families. We call them Canvas Naturals One and Canvas Naturals Two. Each of the color families has a slightly different color hue and in various lights those can change as well. We suggest you start with picking your favorite neutral family or choose our Designer White. Now it is time to choose the depth of color. Each family offers three color options in the wall paint. Choose a deeper color to make your room cozier and a lighter color to make the room look larger and more open. As each color will appear different in every home environment, we suggest buying a can of the Sample and Touch Up Pre-Mixed Interior Wall Paint and testing the color of choice. Feel free to mix and match the colors within the families such as using a lighter color for the ceiling and a darker for the walls. The colors are all designed to mix and match within the same family.

How to Paint Light Switches and Outlet to Match or Blend?

Q. I would like to paint my walls a dark neutral color, but I am afraid that the white light switches and outlet covers will stick out like a sore thumb! I have tried painting them in the past but the paint chips off and then they look worse - is there a way to paint them to match or blend?

A. Start with one of the Canvas Home Basics neutral Pre-Mixed Wall Colors and the matching Furniture, Cabinet and Trim paint, this allows you to paint your walls and then any details in the room the same color. The Diamondhard Technology creates a tough durable acrylic finish and dries leaving a smooth gloss finish. No priming is needed and the paint comes in a variety of neutral colors. Each surface is a bit different, so you may want to try a few different painting techniques to get the best results. For smooth surfaces try a roller and for small metal surfaces a small brush with a dabbing technique works the best.

Paint That Will Work on the Cinder Blocks, PVC Pipes, Copper Piping and Wood

Q. I would like to transform my unfinished basement to our laundry room. Is there a paint that will work on the cinder blocks, pvc pipes, copper piping and wood?

A. This is a dilemma with many home improvement projects. The Canvas Home Basics Furniture, Cabinet and Trim paint with Diamondhard Technology was developed for projects just like this. This paint will work on virtually any surface and level beautifully. It also dries to match perfectly with the same Pre-Mixed Interior Wall Paint to give you the perfect "Home Canvas" And don't forget, it will cover metal, wood, glass, brick, concrete, plastic and more.

Paint That Doesn't Crack and Peel

Q. My newly painted cabinets look great but the hinges just don't look good. I can't afford to replace them, but they are taking away from the updated cabinets is there a paint that will not crack and peel that I can paint the existing hinges with?

A. I would suggest using any of the new Canvas Home Basics Diamondhard Furniture, Cabinet and Trim Paint. It has a tough durable acrylic finish and dries leaving a smooth gloss finish. No priming is needed and the paint is rust inhibiting and scrubbable. For best results, paint the hinges (or any metal surface) with several light coats and let the paint cure for seven days. We like to use a sponge brush and almost drop the paint onto the hinges. This paint with it's Diamondhard Technology is self leveling so it will smooth out, preventing any "goop" from getting in the grooves of your hinge. With adequate dry time, the hinge will look and work like new-adding a new look for minimal cost to your cabinets!

Picture 1: Furniture, Cabinet and Trim paint is great for hinges and the leveling property allows them to open and close in their normal capacity.

Picture 2: Even inexpensive knobs look great with a fresh coat of paint.

Paint That Can Cover Paneled Wood

Q. I have just moved into a thirty year old house and the cabinets are in terrible condition, I can't afford to replace them, but would love to paint or refinish them. Is there paint on the market that has a minimal paint smell?

A. The smell that is given off by so many paints is measured in something called VOC, Volatile Organic Compounds. The lower the number the less smell and the better the paint is for the environment. The Canvas Home Basics Paint line has one of the lowest VOC levels on the market which allows for low odor. With the low odor, it allows you to paint indoors without the headache from paint fumes! No more waiting until the nice weather outside to paint-the need to open all the windows, open the doors and turn on the fans full blast is eliminated!

Pre-Mixed Wall Putty

Q. I am getting ready to move and would like to paint my living room but would still like to hang pictures and don't want to leave the new owners with holes, do you have any suggestions?

A. Yes! It has been the paint of choice for trim due to durability and ease of application, but the end result will change over time. Latex paints of today are much better quality and are more durable than those of the past and in many cases will out perform many oil based paints. Oil based paints are a solvent based paint that emits harmful fumes into the air when being used. You must use in a well ventilated space and a mask is suggested for safety. Many states no longer allow the use of Oil based paints. There are many alternatives on the market such as Furniture, Cabinet and Trim paint by Canvas Corp.

Paints with Zero or Very Low VOC's

Q. I have read about paints with zero or very low VOC's on the market, are they good products and should I go with one of these as a choice?

A. There are a number of versions of very low and even some paints that claim Zero VOC's, the problem is the VOC's are what holds the paint together and the technology today does not allow for a good quality paint with zero VOC's. Companies that offer a formula at 50 are the best products for the lowest VOC's on the market today.
