Do-It-Yourself Painting: A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

Ingredients and Utensils:
• hammer
• screw driver
• TSP pre-painting wall cleaner
• sponge
• pail
• warm water
• putty; refer to Canvas Home Basics colored putty selection
• putty knife
• fine sandpaper
• low-tack tape
• 3 brushes
• one 2" trim brush
• one 1 1/2" sash brush
• one 4" straight edge brush; synthetic bristles for latex paint
• 1 roller
• 1 roller brush
• paint; refer to Canvas Home Basics estimation charts for quantity required
• primer*
• paint tray
• paint stir stick
• old sheets
• damp cloth to wipe as you go
• stable ladder
• good lighting
• music to paint by!
Method:
1. Move furniture into centre of room and drape it with old sheets
2. Remove nails, electric switch cover plates, curtain rods, etc. with hammer and screw driver
3. Wash walls with TSP, for better paint adhesion, following instructions for water and TSP ratio
4. Fills holes with putty according to instructions
5. Tape along edges and over hardware that cannot be removed
TAKE A BREAK!
6. When putty is dry, lightly sand those spots and wipe the dust off
7. Start cutting in (painting edges) with primer* which is only needed when surface is porous or paints are incompatible (eg. latex over alkyd)
8. Roll primer on starting with a big "W", then fill in over that
TAKE A BREAK!
9. When primer is dry repeat steps 7 and 8 with paint; most paints will require 2 coats depending on what color you're painting over and what color you've chosen
10. Check for any final touch-ups needed before you remove tape (best done when paint is still a bit wet) and replace switch plates, etc.

If only I knew then what I know now!
I'm one of those people who has moved many times. I've been a renter and a home-owner. Each time I move I absolutely love to make the new place my own with a fresh coat of paint. But it can be challenging when you're renting and you're trying to keep the colors fairly neutral yet still express your individual style.
